Christmas Carol Blog Hop

Even though I'm not designing any more, the gals at theStudio, where I was, were kind enough to let me participate in the annual Christmas Carol Blog Hop. Each designer chooses a Christmas carol and designs a mini kit to represent that song.

I chose Carol of the Bells for mine. I hope you enjoy it! There are 6 papers and 13 elements, plenty for a cute layout or two! It was nice to do a little no stress designing. (Truth be told I did this way back at the end of October when I had a couple of extra vacation days. Loved it!)

Using a Kindle Fire

Greetings all! Just wanted to check in and let you know about a new little Tumblr blog that I started. I got a Kindle Fire when it was released last week, and I'm trying to use Tumblr to accumulate some of the good hints and information I'm gathering while I try to make the best use of it. I had an iPad through a previous employer so I have some tablet experience and comparisons I can make as well.

If you're interested in that kind of thing, check it out at http://kindlefired.tumblr.com. I also have a Kindle Keyboard (3rd Generation) that I've been using for not quite a year, so I have quite a "team" of e-readers.

I seem to have a lot of interests and I'm debating starting a series of related blogs to share - things like cooking (mostly in a way called Paleo that tries to eliminate grains), technology, and family life. Happy Digital Scrapbooking Day (Tomorrow)

It's Digital Scrapbooking Day (Tomorrow) and many stores around digi-land are celebrating all weekend long. I don't know how much time I'll get to spend doing challenges and what not, but I might do a few particular at my favorite home, the Studio. I'm also going to use whatever time I have to get reaquainted with digital scrapbooking sites and maybe some new designers. I definitely want to spend some time scrapping, I've decided to dive in and work on an album of my trip to Jamaica last March, so I'm trying to be very organized and plan some things out and get scrapping!

There will be a LOT of great sales, and I hope to pick up a few things. I don't really have any specific plans, but I know I won't be able to resist a good deal. theStudio is having a 50% off sale which will be amazing, and my email box is filling up with other great deals.

Thought I'd share my DSD this weekend through a board on Pinterest I've created especially for the event. Strategy for DSD? (Yes, you have to have a strategy.) Here's how I plan to attack the event. :) (At least the shopping part!)

Set a budget. I'm not exactly sure what mine will be yet, but I encourage everyone to set a budget. Otherwise it would be quite possible to go entirely insane. For even $20 you could pick up a lot of great bargains this weekend!
Go through my emails. I've been saving the email newsletters from my favorite designers and stores that have been coming in this week. I plan to cruise through them, shop the good and interesting sales, probably by marking possibles on the Pin board above and then going back and making final decisions.
Cruise Facebook. Going to cruise my Facebook page for the same thing. I really wish there was a good way to mark Facebook posts since they've been coming out all week and I haven't had time to really read them all or follow links. (Are you listening Mark Zuckerberg?) Alternatively if I could group all my fan pages like I can friends, it would be VERY useful too! (Again, hello MARK - pay attention!) :) Basically same thing as email, but I might find a few new things along the way.
Watch Facebook and possibly Twitter for short term coupons and deals from designers and stores. If you use these tools, keep them open while you are at the computer for DSD and check often. I did this hard core one year and got 3 or 4 limited time offers which gave me some items for free. Don't jump on the deal though unless it's something you really want and will use. It's always nice to make sure you do a layout or project for the designer when you get a giveaway like this.
Cruise DigiShopTalk's DSD forum area. Sometimes, I find a few things that are new to me this way. I don't typically spend a ton of time at DST, but they have a forum area dedicated to DSD which is useful for scanning. http://www.digishoptalk.com/boards/forumdisplay.php?f=119
BLOG TRAINS, FREEBIES and the like. This is a great weekend for high quality freebies, because a lot of designers don't do as many freebies as they used to and as a former designer I totally understand. But this is one of the occasions where stores and designers tend to offer a little something. I'll be scouting and pinning the good ones and definitely getting a few things. The DSD forum area has a section for freebies and giveaways, so it's a good place to start. Always download these freebies first before your purchases, since they are often for a limited time.
THANK EVERYONE! Get a freebie, thank the designer. Download a freebie, leave a thank you somewhere. That few seconds really means a lot to designers (I know) and it let's them know you appreciate their work. So, don't forget to say THANK YOU.

DigiDares #250

So, I've been doing some more scrapping again. This time I stumbled across a challenge at the Digi Dares. I remember hearing about the Digi Dares when they first started, but didn't really have time to play along. I found them again (I have no idea how) and was really interested in trying out a "non-store" environment challenge and the style of challenge (kind of like a recipe challenge) is one of my favorites. So, here is what I created for Digi Dares #250.

The dare said I had to have at least one picture with a costume or "dress up" idea, a frame, a doodle, a bright color as an accent and a grungy title. The kit is main Urban Jungle by myself and Digilicious Designs, along with bits from Run, Bike, Swim by Dream Big Designs, Follow by Allison Pennington, and Stated Simply by Mad Scrapper Designs. I also got to break into some new fonts including TheFaultyMarker,ChicagoHouse,VTKSDOWNTOWN, and TheOtherTwin.

It was really out of my box to scrap with more than one kit. But I liked it, and I think I've found an easy way to search through a lot of my kits in Windows 7. I believe I will have to turn it into a tutorial at some point. I don't key word my kits (I do my CU), so I've never been great at crossing over into different kits until I discovered this little trick that I'll share with you in the future.

Making a Sunset Photo "Pop"

My tutorials page is now fully functional again! I finally found a way to host the videos I'd created online, and things are working. FINALLY. Because of the new structure for my site, I need to share this tutorial with you as a blog post and then it will be linked from the Tutorials page in the future. This tutorial has been made available previously, but only from my Tutorials page.

Every year my husband's family rents a cabin on a lake in Northern Minnesota for a week. There is lots of fishing, lots of crazy kid fun, and sitting around a camp fire relaxing and enjoying life every night. This past summer, I took a picture as the sun was setting over the lake. With a little PhotoShop magic, I was able to turn a good picture into a GREAT picture, which I then printed 8x10 copies of for the entire family and gave as Christmas gifts. Believe me, they were well loved!

These steps could be done in either PhotoShop or PhotoShop Elements.

1) Open your photo. Since I knew I wanted to do 8x10 prints, I used the crop tool and set the proportions at 8 x 10 and cropped the photo so I started with it in the right size.

2) Duplicate your photo layer. There are a number of ways that you can duplicate a layer, for simplicity, just right click on the layer and then choose duplicate layer and click OK.

3) Set the blend mode of the top layer to Soft Light. Depending on the look this gives you, you may want to lower the opacity a bit. You can also try different blending modes although I found the sunset colors got too yellow/orange and some contrast was lost in Overlay mode or Hard Light.

4) Add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. You will make very slight changes here. I increased the saturation by +7 on my photo and reduced the lightness by -2. Play with these settings making very small adjustments until you get the "pop" that you like. It's amazing what just a little difference can do for your photo.

5) I picked a pretty font - in this case Selfish available at dafont.com and added a caption in the lower left corner in a dark area.

That's it! Here are my before and after photos!

See how the contrast is increased slightly and you get more of that silhouette feeling. Increasing the saturation just a little bit gives a warmer, richer feel to the sunset colors as well.

Updating my look on my new road...

You might notice that the blog has a bit of a new look to it today. I've updated the look and made a few changes that sort of point where I think things will go now that I'm retiring from designing. As I've said before, I don't intend to leave the land of digital scrapbooking altogether. I just really feel that I need to do something different which fits better into my current lifestyle. Designing is so much fun, but it is also a business and running it takes considerable time. I just didn't feel I was doing it justice, and the guilt of that was slowing me down in other areas of digi.

Part of the new look and new effort is my use of Pinterest. (If you haven't used Pinterest before, please feel free to leave me a comment and include your email address and I'll invite you. You have to have an invitation to join and must have either a Twitter or Facebook account. (although you don't have to post things there)) I have links to several "boards" I have on Pinterest which will be where I save things related to digiland of my own liking. Kits I've purchased and kits I'm longing over. Layouts I love, and just miscellaneous stuff like tutorials or tips that I'm using. Everything here is stuff I really love or like and I figure I should share with you too. Some of it I'll blog about, but more often than not you'll want to follow or check my pin boards frequently. You can also see all of my boards, not just the digiscrapping ones with the last link. (Be warned - I'm a bit eclectic.)

I also will be show casing layouts I've created. I hope to start by just using some of the wonderful kits I've collected over the last couple of years but haven't always used to their fullest. I'll maybe do the occasional guest CT spot. I want to share and promote with you the designers that I love and enjoy.

I'm also in the process of rebuilding my tutorials site and hope to expand on it in the coming months. And because I'm quite sure I can't completely stay away from designing, you're going to find the occasional freebie (templates and mini kits most likely) and the occasional collab thanks to the lovely, gracious Toiny, owner of Digital Scrapbooking Studio.

I hope you'll still drop by from time to time. Follow me by email, Google Friend Connect, Facebook, or Twitter. Check out what I'm tracking on Pinterest. I've done some scrapping!

Just as I'd hoped, ever since I made the decision to retire from designing, I've been more motivated to sit down and scrap. I've done three layouts recently (that's 3 more than in a long time). I wanted to share them with you!

First is one I did with Click! a collab with Angel Hartline that I created a while back. I sure am going to miss doing collabs with Angel! She's just super awesome!

Next, Manda of Nibbles Skribbles was sweet enough to let me play with her new kit - Boy Thing. It's available exclusively at theStudio.

It's time to say Goodbye....but only to designing

Retirement Sale

If you get the newsletter from theStudio, you've already heard this news. I'm sad, excited to release the guilt and move into the next phase, and already itching to design but know I simply don't have the time needed. That's right, I'm retiring from designing. But I have been offered an incredible opportunity to do an occasional guest appearance, and I am really really looking forward to just scrapping and enjoying that for a while. Designing takes a lot of time if you want to do it well, and too often designers don't get to scrap as much as they'd like. Between my new job and being closer to family and friends, I just don't have the time to run my design business properly. But I can't wait to restyle what digital scrapbooking looks like in this new life, and this blog won't be going anywhere. So, I hope you'll stay as followers to the blog for those occasional freebies, guest appearances and hopefully some pages from the lovely designer friends and others out there!

I also wanted to share with you the message I shared with Studio newsletter recipients. Goodbye. Too often it's never a word we want to say, but I guess it's time for me to say goodbye to designing. It took me a long time to come to this decision, but I've made it. In January, my family and I moved home to Iowa. A place where my family and our closest friends live. I was provided with a new and amazing job opportunity, and everything just happily fell into place. I thought at the time I would take a month or two off and then pick right back up to designing. Unfortunately that didn't happen. I tried in fits and starts to design again, but there was always another opportunity to do something with friends, visit family, and the boys have blossomed into all kinds of new activities. It's marvelous, but unfortunately my design business has suffered and its time to move on. I want to get to a place where I can enjoy scrapping again and just design the occasional freebie or something. I feel guilty neglecting my business, and releasing it sets me free to explore the digital scrapbooking world in new ways that better fit my new life. I've so enjoyed being a part of theStudio, Toiny and all of the designers are so wonderful. This really and truly is a special place in the digital world.

In Our Hearts CT Layouts

My CT is still trying to get back into the swing of things. (As am I, I hope to do some more designing of my next kit tonight!) I just have a couple of layouts right now to share with you.

The first is a guest, the wonderful Kari, who created this beautiful layout of her grandmother who she lost earlier this year.

The journaling is particularly moving and reads:

I miss you so very much, Grandmama. When I was back home, one of the first things I thought of was “I have to go see Grandmama”. Your birthday was rough. Mother’s Day I made a card for you, before it dawned on me that you’re not here anymore. You might not be here physically, but you’re never far from my thoughts. I made things you’ve made better than anyone & prayed you were at my elbow, guiding my hand. I love you Grandmama. So much.

She also used a few other bits besides my kit: SpinkyDink Scraps Stitch Me Up, Flergs String Em Up Chrome Alpha, JLD With a Twist temp, and the font is DJB Lisa S print.

In Our Hearts - my newest kit and Deal of the Day!

I know it has been a long time. I'm so sorry for that. It is my deepest wish to get back into the rhythm of designing. I've moved (twice in 6 months, although the 2nd time was just down the street), started a new job, wrecked my car, and found the joy of living near family and friends. Back in late March, I lost someone suddenly that I cared very much about. I'm an only child by blood, but somewhere around the time I was 9 my parent's had a hired hand on the farm. A high school guy who had lost his father when he was young. Time went and he became like a big brother to me. Protector, corrupter, and just general wonderful part of our lives. He was my children's godfather. And he was killed suddenly in a car accident. I was (and still am) shattered. Creating this kit took forever because it was my way of saying goodbye. And I know that my grief is only a morsel of what his wife and 3 children feel every day.

I don't mean to bum anyone out, I just wanted to share the story of how this kit came to be. So many have lost loved ones before their time. I've called it In Our Hearts, because that's where our loved ones remain, Our Hearts. And without further ado, here is that new kit.

As some of you may know, I got a new full-time job in late January and moved my family from Wisconsin to Iowa. I actually consider the move to be going "home" since this is the area I grew up. A move and a new job kept me very busy, and I thought I was going to get something done in time for Valentine's Day and then didn't. I'm starting to find my grove again, so I finished up that Valentine's kit, and now I'll offer it to you as a freebie for one week only!

It feels so wonderful to be designing again. I still have a lot to balance, but I just love the creativity of scrapping and designing and I'm so glad to be back at it. I am working on several things to come your way, but I had to join this month's blog train from the Blog Train Blog!

Hello! Have you missed me? My designing has slowed down recently, but I am not gone. In my full-time job, I've taken on some new responsibilities that have kept me far busier than I have ever imagined! It's a good thing job wise, but it is making me go much slower on my digi-work, and is draining my mojo just a bit. But don't fear - I have no less than 4 things in progress for you, so there will still be plenty of digi-goodness to come! It's just getting created a bit more slowly than usual. The responsibilities should ease up after the first of the year, so I appreciate your patience with me in the meantime.

However, I just couldn't let Halloween go by without a little treat for you! How about a CU friendly template in .psd, .tif, and .png files! With life being so busy, I really like a good template to jump start my scrapping.

Whew! Now, if you read yesterday's post, you know I had the opportunity to meet Manda of Nibbles Skribbles fame IN PERSON! She and I have known each other for about 18 months now in digi-land and I was so excited to get to meet her in person. We had a blast! It was the first time I've met a "Digi" friend in "Real Life", and I had such a great time!

No real news on down stores

You may have noticed that many digital scrapbooking stores are down. I mentioned it a bit on the post below regarding my freebie I had to move.

Both of my main stores - Enchanted Studio Scraps and Divine Digital are down. The web host that provides service to both of those stores and many others shut down the servers due to a security exploit. They have said virtually nothing the entire time about what is going on. The update yesterday said they were replacing equipment and hoped to have people back online later that day. It didn't happen.

Everyone is sad, frustrated, and trying to figure out what to do next.

My guest store at the Digital Scrapbooking Studio is up and running though! If there is something you were looking for that isn't in that store, drop me a comment here or send me an email at janice AT jwdigiscraps DOT com. Many of my most popular products are there, as well as two great exclusive kits - Mom for the Ages and Juicy (a collab with the fab Mistybelle Designs).

My dear friend Manda, of Nibble Skribbles fame, created this AMAZING wedding kit and color coordinating add-ons and even made one for me and my wedding! Then, she gave me the chance to create some pages for her! THANK YOU DEAR! I love this kit and I plan to use it and my special red and gold add-on (I had a Christmas wedding.) to FINALLY create a little memory book of my wedding. (15 years later, but hey, whose counting!)

I am so excited to bring you this next kit. I have a bunch of pictures of my kids doing various music programs for school, that kind of thing. There were plenty of "rocker" type music kits, but I didn't seem to find what I was looking for in terms of a music program/band type of thing, so I created this kit and named it "Child's Song". But even older kids have band and music programs to scrap so I tried not to make it too "young". LOL! My nearly 12 year old wouldn't hear of it. A Little One’s Love – Valentine’s for your Child or Inner Child

I’m excited to bring you the new kit, A Little One’s Love, today. I wanted to do something for Valentine’s day, but wanted it to be a little different. I went with a child centered theme, and tried to include lots of colors – reds, blues, aquas – that will work for boys too. And my CT has gone and shown me that this can be used for lots of different Valentine’s/love/fun type layouts too! Wait ‘til you see all their beautiful work!
